This picture is a good representation of what I hope to explore in this tumblr - the juxtapositions of war and culture.  War’s response to art and everyday life, and art and everyday life’s response to war.
How did this soldier come to this place?  Why is this piano here?  Is the fallen tree to the right of the piano a casualty of a bombing?  If so, why was the piano not touched?  Is culture really so colorful and vibrant as portrayed in this picture where the warm reddish brown piano stands out so clearly against the muted colors of the soldier, his weapons, the landscape?  What song does the soldier play?  A song he learned as a young man, or as a child?  Something that takes him away from this warscape? Is he safe, or is there some risk still present in this moment? (If not from hostile fire, perhaps from his fellow soldiers?)

As for me, I am not a soldier.  I carry no weapons.  I intend no offense, and offer no defense.  All I have is my observations and my questions about the conflict and conflicts which still burn hotly around the world.
